Clean teeth is fundamental to our clinic's philosophy of prevention BUT no one likes getting their teeth cleaned because it hurts right?!
We feel and understand that too so have invested in training and new tech equipment, specifically to improve your cleaning experience. The market leaders in dentistry for this technology being the Swiss made AIRFLOW® Prophylaxis Master. We have had such great feedback that we bought a second machine.
What is airflow treatment?
Airflow treatment is a hygiene treatment that removes persistent stains on your teeth, plaque and discoloration using a combination of warm filtered water, compressed air and very fine antibacterial powder particles that are gentle on teeth and gums.
The traditional teeth cleaning procedure uses vibrating ultrasonic instruments first, to remove plaque deposits from the teeth. This can sometimes be painful & uncomfortable for people with sensitive teeth and gums who may eventually delay or avoid dental visits due to the uncomfortable experience. Traditional teeth polishing uses rubber cups and brushes to help remove stains from the teeth, which some people find leaves an unpleasant feeling in their mouth.
Why is cleaning teeth even important?Dental biofilm, commonly known as dental plaque, is that ugly, smelly light- yellowish to brown layer you can sometimes see on your teeth. Over time it hardens up like barnacles making it even harder to remove. It is serious, as it is full of bacteria and causes dental problems such as bad breath, tooth aches, tooth decay, tooth loss and gum disease.
Dental plaque not only causes dental issues but did you know these bacteria also find their way deeper into the body and may cause other serious diseases over time. Your mouth is considered an entry point to the rest of your body. Researchers have found the bacteria and inflammatory response that dental plaque causes increases the risk of other common diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, Alzhemiers and more. Hence dental health is a critical part of your general health and should not be neglected or under-estimated.
This mass of bacteria grows every day and feeds off the food you eat. Keeping plaque under control by reducing it is an important part of preventative dental care.
Good oral hygiene can prevent most plaque from forming, but even with regular brushing and flossing, some biofilm may still remain. At Neutral Bay Family Dental, our job is to remove it from the hard to reach areas, such as the back of your mouth, in between your teeth, and under the gum level. We also remove the hardened stuff that you can't get off at home!
Dental biofilm is almost invisible to the naked eye. At our clinic, we want to provide our patients with high quality care which means we like to be thorough. This means we do Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) using the EMS Airflow® using the latest technology and a new approach to teeth cleaning and polishing that's less invasive.
To remove efficiently and effectively we will first make it visible with a coloured disclosing agent. Making it visible ensures we don't miss any of it and as we work as a team with you, before we clean it off we can show you areas where you are missing at home and don't realise so that you can improve. Don't worry, you won't leave with purple teeth! First, we will airflow the bulk of the germs off and if need be, scale off any stubborn calcified plaque-calculus. You will see and feel an immediate difference. Getting your clean done regularly and on schedule with us will make the process subsequently easier over time with good oral hygiene and maintenance we will be able to keep the plaque under control.
This treatment can be tailored according to individual needs and different age groups to offer the most comfortable and efficient cleaning possible.
What are the advantages of EMS Airflow® technology? We recommend EMS Airflow® guided biofilm therapy if you find traditional teeth cleaning methods uncomfortable or you have dental anxiety. This minimally invasive approach delivers a high standard of cleaning in less time and involves less direct contact with dental instruments.
This technology was developed in line with European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) recommendations on Professional Mechanical Plaque Removal (PMPR) and Oral Hygiene Instructions (OHI) for Home Care of the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP).
